Genesis 39: 7-23

“So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her – Genesis 39:10

Joseph is a powerful biblical Model of RESILIENT LEADERSHIP: So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her. (Gen.39:10). Joseph’s story, found in Genesis 37-50 demonstrates an unwavering ability to envision the future, sustain divine vision, withstand severe hardship, adapt to changing circumstances, and rise to prominence while maintaining his moral compass. His leadership qualities were forged in the “crucible” of suffering.

In our devotional passage, Joseph shows resilient leadership through his unwavering integrity, passion for purity, and steadfast faith in God despite severe adversity, including unjust enslavement and imprisonment. His story illustrates that resilience is not the absence of hardship, but the ability to maintain character, integrity, and faith in the midst of it, ultimately transforming setbacks into stepping stones for a greater purpose. Key aspects of his resilience were:

Diligence and Excellence in Adversity: "...So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate” (vv.2-6). Despite being a slave in a foreign land, Joseph did not wallow in self-pity. He worked with such excellence that his master put him in charge of his entire household. This quality allowed his abilities to be recognized regardless of his circumstances.

Unwavering Integrity, Moral Purity and Ethical Conduct: Joseph consistently made the moral choice, even when it led to personal loss. He faced persistent sexual temptation from Potiphar's wife, but consistently refused her advances, stating, "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" (v.9b). His commitment to his moral code and fear of God was non-negotiable, even when it led to negative consequences.

Trust in God's Presence: The recurring phrase "The Lord was with Joseph" (Gen.39:2, 3, 21, 23) is central to his resilience. His strength came from trusting that God was sovereign over his life, which enabled him to persevere without losing hope.

Faithfulness and Trust in God in All Circumstances: When falsely accused and imprisoned (vv.19-20), Joseph adapted to his new, unjust reality, remained faithful and diligent, and earned the favour of the prison warden who put him in charge of all the prisoners (vv.21-23). From pit, through prison, to palace, he maintained a steadfast reliance on God's plan and providence.

Focus on a Higher Purpose: Joseph viewed his trials through the lens of God's greater purpose. Later in life, he would tell his brothers that what they meant for evil, “God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive" (Gen.50:20). This perspective on divine providence allowed him to see beyond his immediate challenges.

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
