Bible Meditation:
Proverbs 27: 5-17

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend" Proverbs 27:17

RELATIONSHIP is the fabric, not only of LIFE, but also of LEADERSHIP IMPACT: “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend" (Pro.27:17). Today’s meditation passage, particularly verses 5, 6, 10, and 17, illustrate that authentic relationships, characterized by honest feedback, loyalty, and mutual support, are the "stuff" of effective leadership. These scriptures emphasize that both strong relationships and fruitful, impactful leadership are built on the principles of honesty, accountability, shared support, steadfast loyalty, and meaningful interaction that enhance the refinement of character.

Constructive feedback and honest rebuke are to be valued over flattery: "Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful" (vv.5-6). Sincere love is active and courageous enough to confront a friend's faults or potential downfalls, even if it causes temporary discomfort. In contrast, concealed affection or insincere flattery, like an enemy's excessive kisses, is unhelpful and deceitful. Real leaders do not fear constructive criticism, confrontation or difficult conversations; they speak the truth in love, in order to help and lift those they lead, building trust and strong character, and fostering an environment of growth and accountability. Concealed love or a refusal to correct wrongdoing is detrimental, leading to stagnation and a lack of genuine care for the well-being of the team or organization.

Next is the practical value of loyal, committed relationships and community support: "Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend; nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away” (v.10). Impactful leaders invest in and sustain strong connections with their close circle and community, as a vital support system, especially during crises. Leaders with reliable network of friends and mentors can navigate challenges more effectively than those who rely only on formal ties. The notion of "neighbor nearby" reinforces the need for accessible, consistent support.

Another foundation principle of leadership development is that through interaction, collaboration, and feedback, there can be mutual improvement and refinement of each other's skills, character, and wisdom (v.17). Such interaction creates a culture of continuous learning, mentorship, and development. Progressive leaders surround themselves with wise and challenging people, not flatterers; enduring friendships, not fair-weather alliances. Just as friction between two iron blades sharpens their edges, people can refine each other's character, wisdom, and skills through collaboration. The friction of different perspectives and honest feedback helps leaders and their teams become sharper, more effective, and better equipped to deliver.

The fabric of leadership impact is woven from authentic, honest relationships that hold individuals accountable, provide loyal support, and encourage mutual refinement. Isolation leads to dullness and potential ruin; connection and community foster strength, wisdom, and effectiveness. Rather than being stagnant, relationships should be a source of mutual improvement.

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
