John 8: 37-47

“Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word” – John 8:43

An aspect of communication that’s worth closer scrutiny is EFFECTIVE LISTENING for IMPACT: “Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word” (Jh.8:43). Here, the Lord confronted those who didn't understand His message, highlighting the importance of receptivity and understanding in communication. True listening involves more than just hearing words; it entails an openness to receive and comprehend a message. As part of a larger conversation where the Lord was teaching in the temple and some people questioned His authority, He noted that their inability to understand was not due to a lack of clarity on His part, but their unwillingness or inability to truly listen, receive, and accept His message.

Receptivity is a prerequisite for understanding. Effective listening is not a passive activity but requires an active and receptive attitude. When individuals are not receptive to a message, they fail to grasp its meaning and implications, potentially leading to misinterpretations or a rejection of the message. This underscores the importance of a receptive mindset for effective communication. Proverbs 4:20-22 also underscores the Value of Listening: “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh” (Pro.4:20-22). Learning to listen to God is an essential prerequisite to following His Will.

The Lord regularly speaks to His children in diverse ways:

The Bible is our guidebook to God’s thoughts and actions. We must aim to absorb the message, and listen for His instructions on how to apply His Word: “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days” (Pro.19:20).

Inner Witness in Prayer: The Lord desires communication and communion in our relationship with Him. Practising quietness of mind will yield the desired dividends. There is a place to quiet our mouth and thoughts so that our spiritual ears can listen and hear. Our internal “receiver” tuned to the Father’s frequency develops through committed prayer, meditation, and practice of listening. We must consider carefully what messages we listen to and how: “So take care how you listen…”  (Lk.8:18a).

Others: The Lord places believers in community so we can be supported and helped by counsellors – ministers and brethren – who speak truth into our lives.

Listening is a vital, non-negotiable skill for all who desire to enjoy the best of communion with God and relationship with others. Rewarding relationships demand skilful listening. Most people are better at talking than listening; but effective communicating with involves both. The health of our souls is tied to how well we listen. The Father is speaking. Are we listening?

Our Vision

The vision of KCOM is that:
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the seas" (Habakkuk 2:14).
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
