THE COMMAND OF LIGHT (1)

“Then God said, “LET THERE BE LIGHT”; and there was LIGHT” – Genesis 1:3

It was not accidental that THE COMMAND of LIGHT preceded every manifestation of Life in creation: “Then God said, “LET THERE BE LIGHT”; and there was LIGHT. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness” (Gen.1:3-4). The Bible begins with God and so we must begin with Him always! In the light of every providence, including the dawn of a New Year, we must stand back and respond first of all by seeking God and His Kingdom. Behind all, above all, and before all, is the Almighty God, Who alone is worthy to receive glory, honour and power, for He created all things for His pleasure (Rev.4:11). All things exist by Him, through Him, and for Him.

The uncreated God was there when everything else began. Time, space, dimensions and matter all commenced, but God did not commence. He was the unbegun One; the unoriginated One. Everything else of which we’ve had any experience had a beginning. There is nothing that exists that did not have an origin; all things can be traced back to Genesis 1:1. But the Living God is without beginning or end of days. He is the Beginning and the End – from eternity to eternity. He has no birthday, family tree, or genealogies. He has no external life-support system. He gave to everything else form and substance, structure and life, by His Spirit and by the Word – the Command of Light – “BE, LIGHT”!

At the instance of the brooding of the Holy Spirit over the face of the waters, the Command of Light transformed the earth that was wild and waste, formless and void, with utter darkness covering the deep, into an ordered, structured creation. The Commander of Light was God, the One and only Creator of everything. With the brooding of the Spirit – like a mother-hen providing an atmosphere of fertility and the warmth of incubation – it required only the Command of Light to bring forth Life teeming with diverse creatures on earth, in the waters, and the sky.

John 1:1-3 echo and amplify Genesis 1:1-3; both describing how God creates by the Command of Light: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (Jh.1:1-5). Everything that humanity has discovered, all that is known, and all that is yet unknown, was made by acts of the living, speaking God, Who in His Sovereign Wisdom, designed and created the Universe with this Earth and humanity at its heart!

God, Who by His Spirit and the Command of Light, changed Earth’s Chaos into Cosmos, will establish Order and Structure in our lives, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
