THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA

“I am the ALPHA and the OMEGA, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord…” – Revelation 1:8a

To glorify the God of Impact is to worship THE ALPHA and THE OMEGA: “I am the ALPHA and the OMEGA, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Rev.1:8). This is our Lord Jesus Christ introducing Himself! The words Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Like A and Z, they mean “the beginning” and “the end.” The reality of creation is that things begin and end; years begin and years end; projects start and projects end; the opening chapter of birth ultimately turns to the closing chapter of death. However, the Creator has neither beginning nor end. HE IS the Beginning and the End (Rev.21:6; 22:13). He is the First and the Last (Rev.1:17, 2:8; 22:13).

Our Lord consistently affirmed Himself as the Alpha and the Omega (vv.8,11,17; 21:6; 22:13). As the Alpha, He had no beginning, being before time or the creation of the universe: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (Jh.1:1). He is the First Cause of all existence: “He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (Jh.1:2-3). As the Omega, He is not the “end” as we know it, for in Him there is no end! HE IS into the everlasting, never-ending future. For time and for eternity, Jesus is all we need!

What a Wonder our God is: “Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (v.8b). Before Him there was nothing. There was no “before Him.” There was never a time when He was not! God didn’t emerge out of possibilities. He determines all possibilities (Acts 17:28). Yet, He is Lord, Friend, and Saviour (Tit.2:13-14). Since everything comes from Him and nothing will outlast Him, He has no competitors: "…I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God!" (Isa.44:6). Regardless of how things appear, from A to Z, He is always in control! He has the first and the last words in history and in our lives.
